Case Study: Egina FPSO
Project Summary
Situated 150km offshore Nigeria, at a water depth of 1,150 – 1,750 m, the Egina field lies 20km away from the Akpo field and covers an area of around 500 square miles.
The development of the Egina field began in 2013 and entailed the construction of a new FPSO unit, one OLT unit consisting of the offloading buoy moored to the subsea system and connected to the FPSO, subsea production system, umbilical, flowlines, and risers.
LOC Group, ahead of its integration into AqualisBraemar LOC, provided Marine Warranty Survey (MWS) services for the fabrication, integration, and installation of the Egina FPSO (Floating Production Storage and Offloading) for Total E&P Nigeria Ltd in deep-water Nigeria from May 2014 to December 2019.
The project was run by our Technical Director, PhD Dr Aureliano Schirripa, who is available to answer any questions on this topic.
Scope of Work
The scope of work for LOC involved the following, but not limited to:
- Feasibility study of the integration yard in Nigeria
- MWS and marine advisory
- Established design environmental criteria
- Developed and supervised towing VR simulation of maneuvering FPSO in confined waters of Lagos waterways
- Review of engineering documents and procedures, and carry out site attendances to issue CoAs for all major marine operations including:
- Loadout / loading operations
- Launching
- Transportation
- Confined maneuvering and offshore installation activities of FPSO
- OVID inspection for all ship entering the offshore field
- Suitability surveys for all the shipping asset used for the project: tugs, barges, heavy lift ships
- Assessment and supervision of new build quayside and loading facilities
- Risk assessments and HAZIDs
Additional scope of work was also awarded to provide engineering consulting support in the connection of an additional 11 subsea wells.
Key Features:
- The FPSO dimensions were approx. 60m in width x 33.5m in depth, and topsides modules with gross dry weight of 47,500t
- Multi-national and cross-continental project supply chain, with:
- Fabrication in Korea and Europe
- Transportation of FPSO equipment from Europe to Asia and Africa
- Integration and transportation of the FPSO from Asia to Africa for the final integration in Lagos
- Installation offshore Nigeria
- Key stats:
- Approx. 22,500 man-hours on engineering and document reviews
- Approx. 2800 man days spend on-site covering 550 attendances at critical marine operations
- Inspected 250 vessels
- Issued 450 certificates of approval (CoAs)
- Included cooperation of several of LOC’s world-wide offices: London, Lagos, Korea, Singapore, and China
