MWS for Lavrio-Serifos and Serifos-Milos Interconnectors
Project title: MWS for Lavrio-Serifos and Serifos-Milos Interconnectors
Project location: Greece
Client: Fulgor Single Member S.A. Hellenic Cable Industry
Start date: October 2023
Project Summary:
This project is part of Phase D of the interconnection of the Cyclades Islands to the Hellenic Cable Industry Electricity Transmission System. It’s executed by Fulgor Singe Member S.A Hellenic Cable Industry and Asso Subsea as contractors for the end client Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network Operation S.A (HEDNO S.A).
The projects consist of the interconnection of the Islands of Milos and Serifos and of Milos to Lavrio in continental Greece by means of a cable 3x core AC 150 kV XLPE.
The full length of the submarine cable route was approximately 156 km (109 km between Lavrion and Serifos and 47 km between Serifos and Milos), and the maximum sea depth encountered was approximately 500 meters. The cable had an outer diameter of approximately 210 mm.
Our scope of work
ABL’s scope of work consisted of providing MWS services for the cable load out, shore ends pull-in, laying, offshore jointing, and lay burial, including jetting and trenching. The team of ABL France performed the work with the support of ABL Bulgaria for offshore attendance and ABL Greece for onshore attendance and vessel suitability surveys. Assets involved in the project were CLV Ariadne, TSV Argo, jetting ROV Assojet III and Trencher Assotrencher IV.
Operations took place between two offshore support vessels and four onshore sites. ABL surveyors were stationed both offshore and onshore for the project’s duration to provide MWS oversight.
In the last five years, ABL has provided MWS services for Fulgor S.A. on eight occasions.
Client Challenges
Ensure on-site operations for the critical cable pull-in, laying, jointly deployed, and trenching are done in accordance with the approved method statement and documentation.
Expert oversight was needed regarding weather conditions such as wind speeds, sea currents, and significant wave height limits.
Expert oversight of the Health, Safety, and Environmental aspects was required, starting at the documentation approval stage and ending with final implementation on the project site.
Suitability of crucial Offshore Support Vessels for the project prior to commencement.
Solutions
Marine warranty survey (MWS) services covered engineering review, vessel suitability surveys, documentation, and Certificates of Approval provided by ABL at critical junctures of the project.
Daily Progress Reports documenting operational events observed onboard construction vessels and onshore end worksites and milestones.
Results
Independent oversight ensuring both main contractors are operating in accordance with the approved method statements, prior to and throughout the project duration. Procedures and engineering were thoroughly reviewed, and site surveillance ensured conformity to approved documentations.
ABL assisted the client in achieving the safest and most efficient execution of the project.
